140,000 iPhones activated
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

imageat&t released numbers today that showed only 140,000 iPhones being activated, 60,000 less than what some analyst had predicted.

However 40% of the activations were from new subscribers. I wonder if they deducted Rosemary who promptly canceled her service with at&t and returned her iPhone due to lack of features.

While the iPhone activation numbers did not meet expectations that number is only going to grow as at&t says their July sales of the iPhone are sky high and traffic levels at their stores are at historical levels. Apple and at&t have a 5 year exclusive deal so at&t can only expect the good.

But will the lure of the iPhone put at&t in the same situation as amp’d mobile? Maybe but I doubt as drastic.

amp’d still alive and kicking
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

imageamp’d mobile had sent text messages to it’s customers informing them that their service would no longer work after 12:01 am today. Well that deadline has passed and amp’d users still have the service.

But according to the company their service will only be up and running for one more week. But do not try to call customer service, as no customer service is available.

We here at CellRants.com suggest that all amp’d mobile users switch to Verizon Wireless, as amp’d used the verizon network and it’s the only provider that can offer you what amp’d mobile did, in our opinion anyway.

Good luck to all you ex amp’d mobile users!

Review: Kingston Memory Card for T-Mobile Dash
Monday, July 23, 2007

image T-Mobile was running a promotion for customers who buy the T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur), when they bought the T-Mobile Dash they would recieve a free 512 MB microSD memory card with some additional software. (Offer expired April 30th sorry)

The microSD card is a Kingston card and while Kingston may not be the biggest name in memory cards they are in my opinion the best. So this is a micro review of their microSD card. So why are they the best?

Well I performed a series of simple non scientific test. I timed how long the three microSD cards I had took to load a song via Windows Media Player Mobile on my Dash, how long it took to install Live Search onto each of the cards and how fast I could transfer files on the card onto my computers desktop using the adapters they come with. Each test the kingston memory card out performed similar cards from its major competitors such as SanDisk and Crucial by 1 or 2 seconds. The microSD card from Kingston that T-Mobile offered was 2 seconds faster in everything when compared to the Crucial card and tied or was 1 second faster than the SanDisk card.

I know those test aren’t the greatest of examples and 1 or 2 seconds faster may not seem like much but it is what it is. Sure I could of benchmarked the cards and gave you a bunch of numbers a lot of people would have trouble understanding, but I figured I would use a stop watch and actually time the performance, as those numbers in my opinion tend to be more realistic.

The Kingston microSD card that T-Mobile users recieved via the promotion also included FizzWeather and Concrete No Limites Texas Hold’em poker game.

amp’d Mobile going out of Business
Monday, July 23, 2007

imageI have just recieved an email from one of our readers, which states that amp’d mobile has sent text messages to users last week, stating that their service may terminate effective July 24th at 12:01 am. So in just over 10 hours, amp’d mobile users may not have any service.

If you like your amp’d mobile service I suggest Verizon as amp’d used the Verizon network.

Check this forum post for some Verizon Deals.

Serious iPhone flaw discovered
Monday, July 23, 2007

imageIt hasn’t been out a month but already a serious security flaw has been discovered in the iPhone.

The flaw will allow a hacker to take control of your phone, and receive copies of text messages you have sent/received, files stored on your phone, contact information and more.

So how does your iPhone get hacked? According to Independent Security Evaluators (researches that discovered the flaw)there is a flaw in the wi-fi portion of the phone and the browser, meaning you can simply visit a website with malicious code targeting the iPhone or connect to a wireless network which contains the malicious script.

So far there are not any reports of iPhones being hacked, and Apple says they are investigating the claim of the flaw.

Dog or Not parody of Hot or Not proves to be a hit with Canadians
Friday, July 13, 2007

Rogers Wireless‘ owned Fido carrier recently introduced a contest to find regular Canadians who resemble dogs for an upcoming advertising campaign.  Fido’s advertising campaign generally consists of a customer with their dog talking on the phone, with the customer having some resemblance to their dog.

This is the first time Fido allows for regular Canadians to have a chance to be featured on upcoming ads.  The contest is only open for Canadians, however anyone from around the world can vote on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best. This is a parody of famous sexiness-scale site Hotornot.com. To date there are nearly 5000 people on the website who uploaded their photos to resemble their choice of a dog for the contest. Many of the top images have received as many as 10,000 votes from people all over the world. The contest will be completed on August 31 and anyone can vote for their favourite images, while only Canadians can take part in the contest itself.

Visit the website at Fidoduo.ca

iPhone, You been good to me but…
Wednesday, July 11, 2007

image Well here I am. At the crossroads of a very difficult situation. While I stood in line for about 10 hours and had the time of my life, the phone isn’t half as much fun. There are far too many things that I need from a phone, that the iPhone doesn’t offer. While, yes there are going to be software updates, even after an update I don’t think I will be satisfied. Here it is:

Picture messaging via SMS : It simply isn’t available. Not only do you not recieve the picture, you do not recieve the text with it. There is no option to send pictures via SMS either. When you have a baby and your fiance is gone 12 hours out of his 16 hours awake during the day, pictures are necessary. I have no way of sending him pictures of the new things he does, so he has missed a lot already

Note: Even though this is probably a software thing. Even the Cingular/Att phones capable of sending/ recieving picture texts have troubles sending/recieving them to/from Verizon customers.

Video: No video option what so ever.

SERVICE: They can say “fewest dropped calls” and “most reliable network” but I feel this phone would work just as well shoved up my ass. I had dead spots in the house. IE: The left side of our livingroom couch. The kitchen. Near the pool. And my bedroom. IT IS BY FAR THE WORST RECEPTION I HAVE EVER HAD. Not to mention, my dad noticed that if you hold the phone by the bottom (the appropriate way of holding it) it decreases your bar strength. Sometimes taking full reception, to no reception.

Edge Network: Sucks. I don’t even try to pretend to use it. I use the internet only where there is wi-fi. Pretty much, wherever there is wi-fi, there is a computer. I would rather hop on a computer than navigate through the iPhone. As would anyone else.

Reminder Beeps: You know that annoying beep you get when you have missed a call? Or a text message? Well this phone doesn’t have one of those. It isn’t so annoying when you don’t have one. Say you stepped in the shower and your phone rang ..... when you get out, your getting ready ..... putting your clothes on ..... fixing your hair ..... whatever else you do ...... heading out the door ..... go to look at the time maybe on your iPhone ..... OH WAIT SOMEBODY CALLED?! Yes folks, there is no reminder beeps to alert you when you have missed a call. Same with text messsages. You have to constantly look at your phone when you are away from it

So with a combination of all these things, I think I am heading home. Back into the loving arms of Verizon. After cancelling my contract, I think it’s time to sign a new one. With my old phone and old (RELIABLE) service, I will be whole again.

Rogers, not Apple is reason iPhone is not in Canada
Tuesday, July 10, 2007

When the iPhone was announced at MacWorld San Fransisco in January, many Canadian news sources were predicting the iPhone to be introduced in the Great White North not long after the American introduction.  Clueless Rogers’ Customer Service agents were also confirming the iPhone was coming to Canada very soon after the American introduction, however these was information the representatives learned themselves by reading online.

Canada may not get the iPhone for a long time, not because Apple may believe that the Canadian GSM market is too small, but because the costs for data plans are too high in Canada for the iPhone to sell well. In Canada, none of the major wireless carriers currently have an unlimited data plan offered to its customers, however in the past Fido did have unlimited data, before Rogers Wireless bought the company a few years ago.

The only real option for the iPhone to enter the Canadian market is through Rogers Wireless, which is the only major GSM carrier in the nation.  Rogers’ data plans may prohibit Apple from selling the iPhone in Canada. Firstly, in most of Canada voice minute plans are mediocre at best, for a $30 voice plan on Rogers you would get 100 day time minutes, 1000 evening & weekend minutes (starting at 9PM), and unlimited local Mobile to Mobile/Rogers Landline/Fido, long distance is extra. Secondly and finally, Rogers’ data plans are expensive with the highest end data plan being half a Gigabyte costing around $200/month. With the use of wireless data becoming more and more popular, half a Gigabyte is below a minimum needed for many customers.

If Rogers wants to bring the iPhone to Canada, the pricing structure will need to change, even if a special pricing structure needs to be created for iPhone customers alone in regards to data.

Sprint kick out some customers
Thursday, July 05, 2007

image Sprint in an effort to I guess get rid of annoying customers, has sent out a letter to some customers telling them that effective the end of July, their accounts with Sprint will be terminated.

Sprint says that only a small minority of customers who call Sprint often to complain about billing and other issues are being terminated. The letters were sent out on the 29th of June, so if you are a Sprint Customer who complains a lot, check your mail box.

LaIndia a member and Administrator at this site has not recieved the letter, she does indeed complain a lot though, but her complaints were due to Sprint issues.
