iPhone USB adapter recalled
Friday, September 19, 2008

The iPhone ultracompact USB adapter is being recalled by Apple.

Apparently the metal prongs are breaking off and could possibly cause an electric shock, so far no one has been injured which is a good thing.

Is at&t and Apple clear about at&t’s 3G coverage?
Thursday, July 10, 2008

So is Apple and at&t doing enough to make it clear that 3G isn’t available to everyone? Mike doesn’t think so and he mentions how both companies are not advertising that the 3G network isn’t as large as one would thing.

3G only covers 300 Metro areas around the US and sure that may sound like a lot, it really isn’t when you take a closer look at their coverage map.

Apple releases new iPhone firmware
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Apple has released updated firmare for the ever so popular iPhone. Apple has said little about what is included in version 1.1.4 and appears just to fix some bugs.

As of yet there is no word on whether or not the new iPhone Firmware breaks jailbroken phones but only time will tell. Best not to upgrade until someone finds out for sure.

As we mentioned yesterday, the iPhone SDK has been delayed, today Apple mentioned nothing about it.

Apple SDK Delayed
Monday, February 25, 2008

Terry over at HardwareGeeks, is disapointed that the Apple SDK that was scheduled to be released soon is rumored to be delayed.

Many iPhone users, including yours truly have been anxiously awaiting this release. The iPhone is a great communications device but has limited platform potential without access to native 3rd party applications. Yes you can “jailbreak” the iPhone to allow 3rd party apps but the price you pay is a convoluted update process each time Apple releases a patch.

It’s anticipated that developers will submit their apps to Apple for certification and be made available through the iTunes stores.
What’s not clear is the pricing or how updates to the individual apps will work. I don’t mind paying for apps I find useful but in my mind the price point needs to be $4.99 or less. Oh and give us an MMS app . . . please ?  The iPhone has proven to be very popular and stands to gain in sales and user base with increased functionality. Make it so Mr. Jobs.

So what does an delayed SDK mean to you? Basically you won’t get 3rd party apps anytime soon.

Unlimited data comes to Canada
Thursday, November 29, 2007

For the first time, Canadian mobile carriers are offering unlimited data plans for much less than the price of your arm and leg. Bell Mobility introduced the HTC Touch a few weeks ago with an unlimited data plan for 7 dollars Canadian, or $7.04 US. The plan is also compatible with other wap-based consumer phones, and only allow for wap-access.  Unlike the consumer based unlimited wap plan, the unlimited data covers unlimited HTML based internet browsing (through EV-DO/CDMA 1X) and unlimited email and instant messaging. For PDAs, the HTC Touch is currently the only phone that the $7 plan is compatible on.

Days earlier, Telus Mobility introduced an unlimited instant messaging/e-mail plan for $15 for all PDAs and Blackberrys, but many customers have been given free unlimited data as part of the package to compete with the plan by Bell. Currently there is very little information whether Blackberry devices are compatible or not.

Rogers Wireless introduced an unlimited email and messaging plan for exclusively Blackberry devices for $15, it does not include any web browsing data, nor has Rogers responded to Bell’s $7 unlimited data yet, and they may not until much into the future.

Many believe the unlimited data plans introduced by Bell and Telus are to prepare to combat against the iPhone that is to be released on Rogers sometime in the imminent not-so-distant future.

Two restrictions that the Bell and Telus data plans have is audio/video streaming and tethering to a computer, both carriers forbid customers from doing either on their phones due to the extreme pricing on the plans.

French get an Orange iPhone
Tuesday, October 16, 2007

I mean an iPhone via Orange Mobile.

Apple and Orange (for those of you who don’t know a wireless provider in the UK) today announced that the French unit of Orange will offer the iPhone in France.

The 8GB iPhone will be sold in France on November 29 for 399 Euros. Their press release didn’t say anything about pricing for plan but they will probably be similar to the pricing plans in the UK.

The French version of the iPhone will also have access to the wireless itunes store.
