Bad Marketing by T-mobile

imageDoes T-Mobile not know what phones and plans their customers have?

I am not even out of contract and I am not eligable for an upgrade until Feb 2009. However for the past 3 weeks, I have recieved at least twice a week an offer from T-Mobil to upgrade now and extend my contract.

While I am all for staying with T-Mobile, th offer they are giving me is one I would not take. I am a smart phone user with an unlimited data plan. However they are offering me a Free Nokia flip phone.

Come on offering me something worth upgrading for even if I have to pay for it, offer me something equivalent to my T-Mobile dash but better, don’t offer me a downgrade to my current phone.

I think the marketing people at T-Mobile need to reserch their customers a bit better before sending them upgrade offers.

Mobile Price Wars have Begun
Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Yesterday, Verizon launched a new unlimited calling plan with a starting price of $99 USD. Hours later, AT&T followed suit, and t-mobile joined along an hour after that, thus creating a price war.

However, what confuses me is that some analysts are saying that these plans could lead to a price war! Are they kidding me? What the hell are they talking about? There is no “could lead to a price war”! This is a ‘price war’, and the war started when Verizon invaded the island of Unlimited.

Then, AT&T announced it planned to send its troops onto the island of Unlimited on the 22nd ,and t-mobile said hey, you better watch out we are going to try to claim some of the island too; we are going in on the 21st, we will beat AT&T to the island of Unlimited.

This is a price war; there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Now analysts who are saying this could lead to one are probably being cautious because they know this ‘price war’ will drive stock prices down and scare investors. While that may be true, investors need to realize a lot of people will sign up for these unlimited plans. Many will ditch their land lines for one of these plans, and a great amount of people with these plans probably won’t even use 500 minutes a month.

I predict that AT&T and Verizon will both see a decline in landline subscribers. In fact, I see every form of phone company, be it traditional landline or VoIP, seeing a decline in subscribers in favor of these unlimited plans. I believe these unlimited plans will begin a new era in communication, one where the majority of the American population uses only a cell phone. It’s already started, but with these new Unlimited plans, it’s only going to speed the process up.

Now we just have to wait for Alltel and Sprint to jump onboard. I give them a week, and who knows one of them may surprise us with an even cheaper rate. (I hear about 60 - 80 bucks) Remember Sprint used to offer a 60 dollar unlimited plan they may bring it back.

For $99 dollars a month plus taxes existing and new at&t wireless customers can get an unlimited calling plan, so they can talk all they want.

“We are pleased to offer our customers these great new plans that deliver value and simplified pricing,” said Ralph de la Vega, president & CEO, AT&T Mobility. “This is a highly competitive market and we’re committed to moving fast to meet customer needs.”

Have an Analog Cellphone?
Sunday, February 17, 2008

If you have an Analog Cell Phone, then chances are tomorrow your phone will not work. Most Cell Service providers will be turning off their Analog signal for good tomorrow.

While most people already have Digital Cell Phones there still remain a few people with analog handsets, those people along with some OnStar users and some older alarm systems will not have any service.

The two biggest companies that will shut down their analog service is at&t wireless and Verizon wireless.

So if you have a really old cell phone and tomorrow your service does not work. This is probably why. Just call your cell phone provider to get a new phone.

FCC Approves T-Mobile Purchase of Suncom
Monday, February 11, 2008

imageToday has been a busy Cell Phone industry news day, with Microsoft buying Danger, the new Windows Mobile SmartPhone from Sony Ericsson, an announcement that Starbucks is dropping T-Mobile for at&t and now we get word that the FCC has approved the purchase of Suncom by T-Mobile.

This will be a huge upgrade for Suncom customers who do not have access to a data network via their mobile phones, while t-mobile doesn’t offer the fastest broadband network it will be an upgrade for Sumcom customers in the US and Caribbean.

Check out the FCC ruling here (PDF doc).

Starbucks: T-Mobile out at&t in
Monday, February 11, 2008

image Starting this Spring, Starbucks will drop T-Mobile as their wireless hotsport provider and will replace them with at&t/waypoint.

The price for the hotspot access will also change. Under T-Mobile access was 10 dollars for a day or 6 dollars an hour. Under at&t the price will change to 6 dollars per 2 hours, or you can get a monthly access plan for 20 dollars a month.

Starbucks Card holders can enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi service per day at Starbucks locations offering Wi-Fi access, while more than 12 million qualifying AT&T broadband and AT&T U-verseSM Internet customers will have unlimited free access to the Wi-Fi service. In addition, more than 5 million of AT&T’s remote access services business customers will be able to access Wi-Fi service at Starbucks locations. AT&T will soon extend the benefits of Wi-Fi at Starbucks to its wireless customers.

I personally feel as my T-Mobile hotspot plan has just lost all of its value.
