Is anybody else jonesing after an iPhone? I am. I count the ‘freakin days until it is released! I even paid off a dude at my local Cingular store so I could get my greedy hands on one

So why do I want one? Wow.....too many reasons to list! To begin with, it flat out looks cool. The UI is light years beyond what is currently available and the feature set is a dream come true. I don’t have a video iPod so this will be great. There are many times that I find myself sitting around and waiting for whatever and it would be nice to watch a movie or a music video while I’m waiting. The internet browser is the bomb! I mean.....have you ever tried to surf the web on a cell phone? It doesn’t look *anything* like my browser at home. The iPhone browser looks almost exactly like my browser on my desktop, albeit a bit smaller. Brilliant! Now for the phone itself. I can’t wait to get my hands on this thing. No keys. That is awesome! Also, there are so many features that it would take a whole day to list the things I am looking forward to. One thing I would like to mention is the ability to forward to the message you want to hear. I *hate* having to listen to 4 or 5 saved messages in order to get to the one I *really* want to listen to. I don’t know exactly how the iPhone will pan out but my understanding is that it will seamlessly sync with iCal and Address Book. This is like a dream come true. I live and die by my calendar and the ability to carry it with me throughout the day will increase my productivity. In terms of integration with Address Book, this will allow me to sync my customer database to my iPhone and essentially carry my customers with me where ever I go. When someone calls and wants to schedule a job, I can simply look them up in Address Book and see their complete history instead of telling them that I will call them back when I get back to my desk.

Now....let me be the first to say that *some* of these feature already exist in phones such as the Blackberry but Apple always has a way of doing it much more elegantly and user friendly.

Can you tell I’m excited about getting an iPhone? Hehehehe. I can’t wait!

Deal With It, Boss: Workers Want Android, iPhone Devices

The days of the boss dictating which smartphone you’ll use are rapidly drawing to a close. A younger, tech-savvy generation of information workers is calling the shots, and it’s increasingly requesting consumer-friendly Android and iOS (iPhone) devices, according to a new report from market researcher Forrester.

As a result, IT and telecom managers over the next 12 to 18 months will have to revise their client computing strategies to incorporate smartphones from multiple vendors.

“IT managers are shifting away from a one size-fits-all, corporate-liable smartphone model to one that: 1) includes support for at least BlackBerry, iOS, and Android, and 2) is much more open to individually liable devices connecting to corporate resources,” write Forrester analysts Benjamin Gray and Christian Kane.

BlackBerry Still on Top

Forrester interviewed 200 companies for its “Market Overview: Smartphone Management” report, and found that half of the firms have already adopted a multi-platform mobile philosophy. The challenge for IT managers is how to best embrace multiple phones, some of which have lackluster security and management tools.

Not surprisingly, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices and BlackBerry Enterprise Server remain the “gold standard” when it comes to management and security. RIM tops its smartphone competitors by providing more than 500 wireless configuration and enforcement policies.

A recent Forrester survey shows that 70 percent of North American and European companies support BlackBerry today. Here’s the breakdown for the rest of the mobile OS pack:

Windows Mobile: 41 percent
iOS (iPhone and iPad): 29 percent
Android: 13 percent
Windows Embedded CE: 13 percent
Palm OS: 12 percent
webOS: 8 percent
Symbian: 7 percent
Despite RIM’s charms, however, enterprises are under pressure to loosen their mobile policies and embrace phones from other vendors.

In fact, nearly 60 percent of firms surveyed by Forrester provide some support of personally-owned smarphones. Why? One reason is that the multi-platform strategy helps businesses attract and retain top talent. In other words, if a top recruit want to use her iPhone for work, well, IT had better make it so.

The challenge for businesses is how to maintain a high level of security while incorporating non-BlackBerry devices. One option is to find “device agnostic” third-party management tools that work with--or ultimately replace--BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Of course, another challenge is finding talented IT staffers who keep up with the latest security threats on multiple mobile OS platforms, including Android and iOS.

Initial Thoughts on the iPad

On Wednesday this past week, Apple unveiled their vision of the future: the iPad. A bold move to create a new category of product, somewhere between a smartphone and a laptop, as described by Steve Jobs at the announcement. Do we really need another device to complicate our lives further? Or part with more of our hard earned money for a better way to browse the web while our laptops and iPhones sit idle? Or perhaps this device will usher in a new era of how we interact with technology, consume media and open up entirely new opportunities and businesses that will drive the human race forward, if only to make it to Apple’s next big announcement when the fun starts all over again!

Perhaps we are witnessing the next big technological revolution. Apple revolutionized the computer industry by commercializing the graphical user interface (GUI) and mouse in 1984 with the introduction of the Mac. At that time, no one would have predicted with great certainty that this was going to become the de facto user interface for millions of computers over the next 25+ years. It would seem that the iPhone and iPod touch had been the touchstone for the multi-touch user interface. Based on Apple’s latest quarterly financial results, it would seem that multi-touch is already a big hit. With 75 million iPhone and iPod touch devices sold, the iPad market has a leg up in customer familiarity and an already thriving content ecosystem, thanks to the iTunes and App stores.

Apple is in a far stronger position today to influence the direction of the future of technology than they ever were and Steve Jobs highlighted a number of facts to drive that point home. These include over $50+ billion in annual sales, 125 million iTunes credit card buying customers that have already downloaded 12 billion products from the store with one-click shopping. In addition, Apple is the #1 mobile devices company (as described by Steve Jobs), by revenue compared to Sony, Samsung and Nokia. These key points also give Apple tremendous leverage when negotiating for eBook, music and video content deals as well as wireless 3G data plan pricing to complete their end user experience and sell more hardware.

Apple has 284 retail stores throughout the world and has hosted 50 million visitors in the last quarter alone. Talk about an effective distribution channel! The hands-on-exposure the iPad will get is going to be phenomenal and from what I’ve read on this new device throughout the blogshpere, a hands-on session leaves a relatively positive impression in terms of the speed, responsiveness and richness of the display.

Another key takeaway from the announcement is the fact that Apple now produces its own silicon chip (Apple A4 chip made possible by their P.A. Semi acquisition in 2008), to power the iPad. In order to exert control over the end user experience, you must control the key components that build your device to deliver a unique and tailored experience that cannot be duplicated by competitors and your dependance on others for crucial components are diminished. After the PowerPC chip ran its technological lifespan and left Apple in a precarious position with respect to the competitive PC computer market, Apple doesn’t ever want to be compromised in this way again. Control over key components for their hardware and software will ensure that they are in control of their own destiny. The acquisition of PA Semi in 2008 made this breakthrough possible and it will find its way into Apple’s complete mobile products line up.

I find myself musing over the different applications this device can serve in my personal and professional life. How to become ever more efficient with the iPad so as to extract the maximum benefit from life with a minimum of time, energy and financial resources. It’s all very exciting. Look for further articles I will pen to opine on some useful tasks for which the iPad can be used to make our lives easier and our experiences more enjoyable, kind of like what Apple Inc. and its products aim to do.
