Review: Sprint Upstage by Samsung
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

imageTo flip or not to flip, that is the question with the Upstage.  The Upstage is a slim phone with dual screens, a larger screen on the back and a smaller screen on the front.

The Upstage is a nice looking phone, very stylish, ultra thin, good form factor and light weight and comes with a battery pack/case for additional talk time, but when you first get one it is a bit tricky to operate, due to the fact of having to flip the phone to fully use it.  After you get used to it though, you begin to become more accustomed with the features, and it becomes a non-issue.

If you love music, movies and T.V. the upstage is for you, not only is it a phone but it is a video player and a music player.  You can watch live T.V. and movies/movie trailers on the Upstage, you can also download music from the sprint store or you can sync your Upstage with your P.C. and transfer music on to it (Only music that does not have DRM restrictions.).  The T.V. channels and music store offered by Sprint are all easy to use.  The Sprint network is fast which allows fast download speeds for the T.V. channels and music, which in turn allows you to not wait long for them to complete.

I do have two complaints with the phone though:

A) The type of music I can listen to on the phone.  I wish I could play my Napster or Urge music on the phone, not just DRM free music or music I buy from the Sprint store.

B) Texting, it was a bit difficult to get some words to come up correctly due to the fact it uses T9 and I kind of wish I could type out my message and view it on the larger screen, but this is due to the position of the keypad you’re restricted to reading what you type on the front screen, but once you get use to it you begin to type faster and it is not that bad.

It also has a 1.3 mega-pixel camera which takes spectacular video and still images.

Another really cool feature called SMS Voice, which allows you to send voice messages to anyone, you simply record a message on your phone and send it as a text message, the person you sent it too receives a txt message with a phone number; they call that number and listen to your message. I loved using this service!

Overall I loved the Upstage. It comes in Black and Red and only available with Sprint. The cost is just $99 after a $150 instant rebate and a $50 mail-in rebate.

My score is definitely a 5 out of 5 and is a must have for anyone with Sprint that love music and movies.

I have had the upstage for about a month and have done my homework or forum and video reviews before its purchase and have put this through hell to test it against its reported weaknesses. This phone generally gets terrible reviews but just as this reviw has said, the phone is simply amazing. I watch live Discovery channel programming everyday now; dirty jobs, myth busters, Man vs Wild, planet earth etc...its amazing how good the clarity and load tim are and this is just one of many daily programs I watch on the go. I can also listen to CD quality audo, make great and I mean great video clips, take great images and texting is a non-issue. It’s really even easier than this review described if you just swap the T9 for regular text, the text prediction still works even just using abc and will finish your sentances for you 3 of 5 times accurately. The phone itself is great in my hand and clarity is good, signal as well is strong indoors or out. Bluetooth service on this phone is huge and I use this with a motorola h700 earpiece and the motorola S805 Stereo bluetooth headphones. Both pair flawlessly and are clear and vibrant and natural. Sound through the headphones unbelievably sounds better than through my Sony wired headphones. Amazing phone...even has GPS and straming radio etc. Sprint power vision plan is a must to enjoy the phone but with it you have almost unlimited media at your fingertips. Full length movies can be purchased and downloaded to this phone and the 15fps delivered by the upstage displays them really well for such a small stature. Very clearly viewable. I love this phone and will keep replacing this one with replacement upstages untill they are no longer available...or if samsung creates another candybar phone that “upstages’ the upstage.

This damn phone screwed up my computer - completely. So now my computer gets to go get repaired at my expense because Sprint sucks and refuses to recognize that there’s a possibility that the damn phone actually fucked up my computer. WE TOOK the damn thing back and got a centro.

May I ask what it did to your phone?
